Sahlen's Thanksgiving Tournament Results

Position: | Alexander entered a team into the
U19 Thanksgiving Tournament that had an interesting mix of
players. 3 seniors, 2 juniors, 1 sophomore, and 9 freshmen showed
up looking to make some noise in the U19 division. There were 3
teams entered into the tournament, and if Alexander wanted to win the
entire thing they would have to beat the team named Germania, a team
which had beaten Alexander soundly in last years Christmas
Tournament. Alexander started off the day fast and never slowed
down or looked back as they swept the first 2 games to move into first
place. They then won their last 2 games to go 4-0 on the day and
take the tournament title, the first indoor tournament title that
Alexander has won since the GCC tournament 2 years ago. It was a
great win for Alexander, as their young players continue to improve.
Alexander 2 Germania 1 Alexander came into the game knowing that they could still win the title even if they didn't win the game. However Alexander didn't want to win the tournament that way, they wanted the perfect record and a championship that was won outright, not by tiebreakers. Alexander came out fast nearly scoring twice in the first minute of the game thanks to some great offense by Missy and Linz up top. Alexander hadn't allowed a goal all tournament, but that didn't last long into this game. A shot was taken from out near half field, it came through the defenders and Leslie didn't see it until it was too late. It found its way into the corner for a 1-0 Germania lead. Alexander didn't let this discourage them as they went right back on the attack. Whit, Julia, and D worked the ball around while they fed it forward to Missy and Linz. Missy went in on a breakaway and had a couple shots at it before poking it in past the keeper to tie the game at one. Stacey, Kim, Alesha, and Cat all did a great job on defense marking up and limiting Germania's shots throughout the game. Alexander continued to pound the ball on net, with Missy, Linz, and Duval all getting some great looks up front. With just over 10 minutes left in the game, Kristi crossed a ball to D, who went in alone on goal and blasted the ball into the corner to put Alexander on top 2-1. Alexander nearly iced the game several times with Missy, Linz, and Whit all having good chances but not finding the back of the net. Leslie made some excellent saves in net to help preserve the victory. As the final whistle was blown, Alexander had the 2-1 victory in this game, a 4-0 record on the day, and the tournament title complete with trophy. 1st star went to D, game winning goal and some great work on the outside of the field. Good crossing and excellent defensive help. 2nd star goes to Alesha, great work in the back, excellent job on her mark, good clearances out of trouble. 3rd star goes to Missy, picked up her first goal since returning from the injury, excellent runs with and without the ball. Excellent performances were also turned in by Leslie in net (6 saves), Kim, Stacey, and Cat in the back, Julia and Whit in the mid, and Linz up top. Great job girls. Alexander 1 Aurora 0 Alexander came into this game knowing that they needed to play well to get the victory and set up their chance to win the tournament title. Alexander started out slow and needed some good play from their defense and Leslie in goal and got just that. Stacey, Alesha, Kim, Cat, and Leslie were up to the task in the back as they shut down Aurora's offense and kept them out of the net. Alexander struggled to move the ball through the middle of the field, but continued to work hard to get the goal to put them ahead. Whit took a pass from Linz just under halfway into the game and put it in the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. From there it was all defense as Alexander held onto the 1-0 lead for the win. With just over 10 seconds left Whit took a great through pass from Julia and went in on a breakaway and scored to apparently make it 2-0, but the goal was called back on a very strange offsides call. It was a tough victory, but put the girls in the position to win the tournament in their next game against Germania. 1st star in the game goes to Leslie, was great in net picking up 8 saves and keeping us in the game when we got off to the slow start. 2nd star goes to Whit, picked up the games only goal and had a 2nd that was taken away. 3rd star goes to Julia, strong work on the outside of the field, held the ball well, and played some good defense. Great performances were turned in by the entire defense (Stacey, Kim, Alesha, and Cat), and Linz and Missy up top. Good work girls. Alexander 2 Germania 0 Alexander faced off against Germania, a team made up of mostly college Freshmen, a team that had beaten them badly in the Christmas Tournament last year. Alexander knew they would have to play their best game to have a chance to win this game. Alexander came out hot and scored early, then never looked back. D took a ball down the side and ripped it in the corner to put Alexander up early 1-0. The defense stood tall in the back with Stacey, Kim, Alesha, and Cat did a great job marking up while Leslie made 7 saves in net to pick up the shutout. Towards the end of the game Alexander iced it when Linz took a pass from Whit and buried it in the corner of the net to give Alexander the 2-0 lead. Alexander was excited about the win, which put them into first place in the tournament, but they knew that they had to play well in the next two games to take the title. 1st star goes to Linz, who played well all game and iced the game late with a great goal. 2nd star goes to Julia, played an exceptional game in the midfield with great passing and ball handing. Had some great shots also. 3rd star goes to Leslie who had another excellent game in net to pick up her 2nd straight shutout. Great games were also turned in by the defense (Stacey, Kim, Alesha, and Cat), D in the midfield, and Missy up top. Alexander 2 Aurora 0 Alexander started off the day with a nice performance in a 2-0 win over Aurora. It was a solid all around game with contributions from all players. Alexander started the scoring off early as D took a pass from Linz and buried it for the 1-0 lead. Alexander was playing great defense thanks to Stacey, Kim, Cat, and Alesha. Leslie had 5 saves in net for the shutout. The passing by Alexander was excellent as they moved the ball around the field. With about 7 minutes left in the game Alexander nearly took a 2-0 lead as Laura's shot was saved by the keeper. Just over a minute later Laura sent a ball in that Whit put into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. The defense would make that lead stand up and Alexander started the day out with a 2-0 win. 1st star in the game went to Stacey, great game in the back, nice passing out of the back, and good communication with her marks. 2nd star goes to Whit, picked up a goal and moved the ball around the field well. 3rd star goes to D who picked up a goal early in the game and played well on the outside of the field with some great crosses. Great games were also turned in by Leslie in net, Kim in the back, and Linz and Miss up top. Great job ladies. |
