The Varsity team played in the Oakfield U16 tournament
Saturday and had a pretty solid overall day of soccer. Alexander
lost in the semi-finals to eventual champion York 1-0 in golden goal
overtime which was their only loss of the day, but unfortunately it was
a loss that probably cost them the title.
Alexander opened the day against Oakfield and finished tied 0-0. Alexander had quite a few shots, but not much movement off the ball and didn't have many dangerous shots throughout the game. Oakfield's goalie got her hands to everything that came near the goal and Alexander started the day out with a tie. 1st star in the game went to Court who moved with and without the ball and attacked the net. 2nd star went to Leslie who had a great save near the end of the game to keep the game tied and avoid a loss. Alexander faced off against Bergen next and started out with a lot of stationary play once again, but Stacey dribbled the ball up the floor, beat two defenders, and ripped the ball in the net to make it 1-0 early. This seemed to convince everyone they wanted to move around to try to score goals and from this point for the most of the rest of the day Alexander began to move off the ball. Alesha and Maranda would both pick up a goal and assist each the rest of the way to make the final score 3-0. The defense was strong and Leslie made 4 saves to get the shutout. 1st star in the game went to Stacey, scored the first goal of the game which seemed to make everyone else decide to start playing. 2nd star went to Alesha who stepped up in the play well throughout the game and picked up a goal and an assist. 3rd star went to Rachel who had a strong game, stepped up into the play well, and had some nice passing. The 3rd game saw Alexander face off against York and Alexander came away with a solid 3-1 victory to move into 2nd place (behind Oakfield) in the opening part of the tournament. Alexander's first goal would come off the foot of Alesha to make the score 1-0. York would tie it up a short time later at 1-1. Alexander would then get a goal from Kristi off the keepers hands to make it 2-1 and Rachel would put the game away off a pass from Alesha to make the score 3-1. All players chipped in on a great defensive effort. Leslie made 5 saves in picking up the win. Alexander would immediately have a rematch with York in the playoffs and would end up with their 2nd straight semi-final overtime loss. Alexander played a solid game but wore down as the game went on and lost a little of their movement off the ball. Alexander managed to hit a post early in the game but the score remained 0-0. Leslie made several fantastic saves throughout the game to keep the game 0-0. Stacey would tweak a hamstring (that she had already hurt in track earlier in the week that I didn't know about) with just a couple minutes left in the game and Alexander would go on without her. Into overtime the game would go and after 3 minutes of scoreless soccer York would get a cross to an open player in the middle and put the shot by Leslie to win the game 1-0. York would go on to beat Oakfield 2-0 in the finals to win the title (they won the U19 title also). It was a good game of soccer that ended with some awful sportsmanship by Alexander going through the line with York after the game. Completely unacceptable behavior which put a sour note on a good day of soccer. Alexander heads to Brockport next for what looks to be the toughest tournament of the year. |
