This tournament marked the first official tournament played by the
'Dogs. Both teams played very well at this tournament, with the
Varsity team coming away as the champions. I am only going to do a
brief recap of the tournament because I didn't take any notes on what
the scores were or who scored the goals or any of that good stuff.
The Varsity team went 3-1 in its first four games losing only to Elba in the closing seconds of their first game. All three wins were shutouts posted by The Bean in net. Whit, D, Theresa, and Irena had most (if not all) of the goals that were scored by the varsity team. In the finals, Alexander got their rematch with Elba and sent them home with a 2-0 loss and 2nd place. Alexander got goals from Irena and Whit in the final game to get the 2-0 win. Beaner and the D held Elba to a goose egg on the board and picked up their 4th shutout of the day. 1st star of the day was Whit, she had a bunch of goals and played solid all day long. 2nd star went to Irena, played awesome all day long, and showed a scoring touch with at least two goals on the day. 3rd star goes to D, who had her shot working all day and was just ripping them from everywhere (hitting the post and moving the entire goal several times). Honorable mention goes to Beaner, who had an awesome day in goal making several sprawling saves and Bekah, who had a very nice day of defense in the back. The JV team didn't manage to pick up a win on the day, but came away with several highlights. We played Bergen 1-1 for 20 minutes only to have some defensive lapses in the end and give up a few late goals. We outplayed Pioneer, but their goalie stole the game from us as we lost 1-0. We didn't play well against the Varsity team and got beaten badly (they played very well). The final game against Elba we played very well and were only down 2-1 late in the game before Elba put the game away with a late goal ending our day. Although we didn't pick up a win, this team (comprised of 6 7th and 8th graders and 2 9th graders) performed very well for 3 out of the 4 games in a tournament where every other team was a varsity level team (and most probably didn't have any players under 10th grade, let alone without any varsity experience). This group of girls is gaining lots of experience that is going to help them out a great deal in the upcoming U15 and JV seasons. I am very impressed with how well they are playing against the other varsity teams. 1st star of the day goes to Molly, picked up 2 goals on the day and played very well for her first action in a while. 2nd star goes to Sarah, great leadership during the games as the lone captain that was present at the tournament, played great in goal when she took a turn at it, had several great shots, just an all around good day. 3rd star went to Stacey, played strong in the back all day long, rarely got beat, very nice set of games. Honorable mention went to Alesha and Julia, both played solid all day long, Julia up front and in the middle and Alesha in the back. Great tournament girls, nice job both teams. |
