We took a very young team to the Fredonia tournament and
came away with a disappointing finish, going 0-2-1 on the day, but we
were very competitive in every game. Despite not making the
playoffs we played even in all three games and if we had played a little
better defense we easily could have gotten into the playoffs, and that
is quite impressive for a team of 3 Juniors, 1 Sophomore, 3 Freshmen,
and 6 8th graders in a varsity tournament. Fredonia is having
another tournament the 7th of March, hopefully we can put a team
together and go back to improve our showing. Now for the game
recaps.
Lakewood 2 Alexander 0 Alexander came into the final game of the day needing to pick up a win to get into the playoffs. Things started out slow as Alexander's marking was not what it should have been and that resulted in an early Lakewood goal. Alexander settled down slightly with their marking and Missy, Linz, and Julia got some offense going. Whit, Cat, and D also were working well together. Alexander battled tough for the next 10 minutes, but unfortunately with just over 5 minutes left another mismark would lead to a 2nd Lakewood goal, all but eliminating Alexander from the tournament. Alexander worked hard, but was unable to pick up any goals in what turned out to be their final game of the tournament. Stacey, Alesha, Molly, and Kim did a solid job in the back, but didn't get the help they needed when Lakewood pushed an extra player forward. Becky did a nice job in net, making 6 saves including 2 big time diving stops that kept the score at 1-0 early on in the game. 1st star went to Julia, finished off a strong day with another solid effort. Excellent passing, good decisions with the ball, and some good defensive help with her marking. 2nd star went to Becky, made a couple big saves early in the game to keep Lakewood from putting Alexander away, very impressive game. 3rd star went to Cat, played a solid game up front with some good passing and very nice help on defense. Nice games were also turned in by Molly in the back, Whit in the center and Missy up front.
Maple Grove 3 Alexander 2
When the girls look back on the day, this will be the game that got away. Playing excellent soccer early on Alexander jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals by D on a break away, and Whit on a rocket into the upper corner from 30 yards out. Alexander's marking was excellent for 15 minutes, but unfortunately they suffered a big let down as the game wore on. Maple Grove kept pushing forward with everything they had, and in the last 5 minutes would pull out a great comeback. It started with a nice run up the middle that was unmarked and resulted in an easy goal. Just over 2 minutes later Alexander again dropped a mark and Maple Grove's outside defender snuck in and blasted a goal in the back of the net to tie the game at 2. Alexander held on for the last 2 minutes with some nice saves by Becky, but with 10 seconds left Maple Grove got a 3v2 breakaway that Alexander played well, but the ball snuck through to the back post and was put in with literally one second on the clock. All around it was a well played 15 minutes, but the last 5 weren't so hot and resulted in Alexander falling 3-2. 1st star went to Alesha, great aggressive game of defense, stepped in front of her mark all game long and gave up very few shots from her side of the field. 2nd star went to D, great game up front, huge break away goal to give us the 1-0 lead, and strong marking and defensive help (no hair fixing when she was supposed to be playing defense). 3rd star went to Whit, solid game in the middle and picked up a very nice goal which should have sealed the game up for us. Strong games were also turned in by Missy up front, Julia in the middle, Molly and Kim in the back, and Becky in net.
Alexander 1 Grand Island 1 Alexander got off to a good start to the game against one of the better teams at the tournament. D got Alexander on the board early with a rocket goal that went in the back corner of the net off a sweet pass from Julia. The defense lead by Alesha and Stacey made that lead stand up for nearly the entire rest of the game. But unfortunately with 10 seconds left (according to the ref, my watch said 20:32) Grand Island snuck a player in on the back post who poked in a goal to tie the game at one. It was just the beginning to what would be a very tough day for Alexander. Julia played a very solid game in the middle of the field, feeding passes to D, Cat, Missy, and Linz up top who had a bunch of good looks on net. Becky made 5 saves in net and nearly picked up the shutout. 1st star goes to D, played a very nice game up front, picked up a goal that should have won us the game and passed the ball very well. 2nd star goes to Julia, great field vision, good passing and solid defense. 3rd star goes to Alesha, great game in the back, stepped to the ball well and gave up very few good shots from her mark the entire game. Solid games were also turned in by Becky in net, Missy up front, and Stacey in the back. |
