For the first time during the indoor tournament season
Alexander played with an edge and came away with a very dominant win in
a tournament which had good competition and picked up the Fillmore
tournament title.
Alexander started off the day facing off against Fillmore and came away with a 1-0 win. Julia picked up the goal for Alexander late in the game to put Alexander ahead. Alexander passed the ball well and limited Fillmore to only one shot on net which was saved by Leslie as she picked up the shutout. The Alexander defense was dominant throughout the game. Alexander faced off against a tough Houghton team in the 2nd game of the day. Julia would pick up a goal off an assist from Bucky to put Alexander up 1-0 midway through the game. That lead would stand up as Leslie would make 3 saves in net for her 2nd win and 2nd shutout of the game. Alexander continued their strong play throughout the game with some great overlapping runs and fired a lot of shots on the net. Alexander squared off against Northwest (a team that had beaten everyone badly at the Albion tournament on their way to that title) in the 3rd game of the day. It was clear that Northwest was a strong opponent as they quickly had several scoring chances that were stopped by Leslie, off the post, or knocked away by a defender. 6 minutes into the game Northwest picked up a goal as a mark got loose down the middle of the floor and buried the shot. On the ensuing kickoff Alexander caught Northwest subbing and Julia touched it to Alesha who shot it into the goal before Northwest was set to tie the score at 1. Minutes later Bucky would send a ball in front of the net and Julia would deflect it into the net to give Alexander the 2-1 lead. The defense played strong in the back and scrambled well when they got themselves out of position. Leslie had a strong game in net making 5 saves and distributing the ball well out of the back. Alexander had 1st or 2nd locked up as long as they didn't lose their last game. They played the Sting in the final game of the round robin and would come away with a 1-1 tie. Alexander would go up early as Alesha would fire a shot in on net and poke in the rebound to make it 1-0. Alexander wasn't able to hold the lead as a ball took a deflection in front of the net off an Alexander defender and made its way into the net to make the score 1-1 late in the game. Alexander was unable to put in the go ahead goal and in their worst game of the day they picked up a tie. Alexander dropped to 2nd in their group and had to play their first playoff game right away against the other Sting team. Alexander didn't take long to get started as Stacey put a goal into the net in the 2nd minute and the 3rd minute both off of Bucky assists. 6 minutes into the game Kristi made it 3-0 off a Court assist. Julia made it 4-0 3 minutes later off a Bucky assist and 3 minutes after that Julia made it 5-0 off a Stacey assist. The Sting would ruin the shutout with 1 minute left in the game to make the final 5-1 as Alexander moved into the semi-finals. Alexander and Fillmore faced off in the semi-finals and Alexander again didn't take long to get started. Alexander scored 3 goals in the matter of 4 minutes into the game to make it 3-0. Court picked up the first goal off a Kristi assist, Bucky picked up the 2nd goal off a Julie assist, and Maranda finished off the scoring off a Julia assist. With just a minute left in the game the shutout was again ruined as Fillmore put in a goal to make it a 3-1 final. Leslie was brilliant in net making 5 saves picking up her 5th win of the day. In the final Alexander would need to beat Northwest again. Northwest was itching to get even for the 2-1 win Alexander put on them during the round robin. Northwest and Alexander were clearly the 2 best teams and they would settle it over 13 minutes of soccer. It was back and forth during the first few minutes with scoring chances for both sides. Alexander would break through 7 minutes into the game as Stacey fired in a shot off an assist from Court to make it 1-0. Moments later Alesha would put one in to make it 2-0. Alexander was dominant defensively the rest of the way to keep the shutout and win the title. It was a great end to a very impressive day of soccer. Leslie made just 2 saves in the finals but both were big saves to keep the shutout. This tournament showed what Alexander is capable of if they play with an edge and having a desire to not be pushed around. Beating Northwest twice is no small feat. Nice job girls |
