The varsity team played in the Brockport Tournament for
the first time and didn't get a good draw as far as the games went and
ended up a couple points short of the playoffs. Alexander started
off the day with 3 games in a row with only 3 subs and it didn't work
well as they came away with two 1-0 losses and a 1-1 tie. Still
having a chance in their final game to sneak into the playoffs Alexander
managed a 1-0 win but was unable to get into the playoffs. The
competition was solid at the tournament, but playing 3 games in a row
didn't get us off to a good start and in the end we cost ourselves the
playoffs by giving up soft goals with dropped marks or
miscommunications.
The first game of the day Alexander faced off against Williamson. Alexander allowed a goal in the first 45 seconds of the game and from that point on outshot Williamson 13-1 but couldn't get one into the net and would fall 1-0. Alexander moved the ball well in the back, but settled for long shots and long balls in the air and lost possession around the goal which lead to some wild shots as well. 1st star in the game went to Buck who made some great overlapping runs and had some great shots to go along with some great defensive work. 2nd star goes to Julia who possessed the ball well in the middle of the floor and had some nice shots. 3rd star went to Alyssa who was constantly making runs and had some solid passing. The 2nd game of the day (2nd in a row) Alexander played Brockport. Again Alexander would give up a goal inside the first minute and fall behind 1-0. It was a very even game the rest of the way with Court leading the charge up top with some nice possession and good passing. The defense did a solid job of getting back on marks and keeping the ball out from in front of the net. With just over 3 minutes left Anna hit a cross to Buck who blasted it into the net for her first goal of the winter to tie the score at 1. Alexander had several other great chances to score but was unable to get one into the net. 1st star again went to Buck who picked up a goal and played solid soccer all game long. 2nd star went to Court who did a very nice job up top, coming back to help, and showing for the short passes. 3rd star went to Anna who had some nice passing out of the corner and picked up an assist on the tieing goal. Alexander squared off against Irondequoit in there 3rd game of the day, and 3rd game in a row. Alexander was a bit tired by managed to play some nice looking soccer in their half of the floor and had some solid passing and possession. However Alexander continued to settle for long balls from the midfield to the forwards which killed their possession and caused them to lose a few good scoring chances. Alexander would give up a bad goal on a no-communication in the back and fall behind 1-0. As was the story of the day, Alexander would not get a goal in the game and would fall by a score of 1-0. 1st star in the game went to Buck who continued to be the best player on the floor with her runs off the ball, defensive work in the back, and solid passing and shooting up top. 2nd star went to Sid who had a very nice game on the outside and had a couple nice runs down the middle with the ball. 3rd star went to Alyssa who had a couple of great passes up top allowing her teammates great scoring chances that just weren't finished off. In the 4th game of the day (we had a break this time around between games) Alexander still had a slim chance of making the playoffs. They would need a win and a handful of goals to put themselves into 2nd place pending the outcome of the last game. Alexander would get the win but would only pick up a single goal which wouldn't be enough to get them into 2nd place. Alexander's lone goal came as Buck hit a pass to Sid who went in on goal and beat the keeper to put Alexander up 1-0. Alexander had a couple nice looking shots throughout the game but none were very dangerous and the game would finish 1-0. 1st star in the game went to Sid who had a superb game picking up the goal and nearly having another until she was taken out near the top of the goal box. 2nd star went to Buck who had another great game on the floor making strong runs off the ball all game and having some nice defensive work in the back. 3rd star went to Stacey who stepped up into the play well in the center of the floor and had some nice work in the back. In the end Alexander finished tied for 3rd a couple points out of the playoffs. It was a pretty good showing by Alexander, but too much settling for long balls over the top rather than building up possession all the way through the midfield. It was probably Alexander's best performance of the winter, but there still is work to be done. |
