The U15 team headed off to the Batavia Tournament over
graduation weekend hoping to come away with a good result. They
faced off against three tough teams and came away with three ties and no
trip to the finals. Despite the three ties, two of the games were
well played and could have easily have been wins. The girls played
a lot of soccer over the weekend, including two league games leading up
to the tournament, they will return to the tournament next year and look
for a better result.
The first game saw Alexander face off against the Greece Buccaneers and nearly pull the victory off. The offense moved the ball around well while the defense of Bucky, Stacey, Maranda, and Alesha completely shut down the Greece offense. Just before halftime Missy took a pass from Linz and poked it near side to give Alexander the 1-0 lead. In the 2nd half Alexander fell victim to a ball that they could not get cleared out of their end, which Greece eventually would put in the back of the net to tie the game at one. Alexander was unable to get anything into the back of the net and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. The second game Alexander squared off against Livonia needing a win to put themselves in position to make the finals. Unfortunately Alexander didn't play one of their better games and had to settle for a 0-0 tie. Becky picked up 8 saves in net for the shutout. The third game Alexander needed to bounce back and try to close the tournament out with a strong performance and they did just that. Alexander dominated the first half. Kate, Carissa, and Julia lead the way in the midfield moving the ball all over the field. Missy and Linz made some nice runs up top and several times nearly put the ball into the net for the lead. Stacey, Bucky, Alesha, and Maranda played a very strong game in the back. Becky made several good saves in net to keep Alexander in the game. Bergen had only 2 shots in the first half, but one was a PK that would put them up 1-0. Alexander came out strong in the 2nd half and continued to push the ball forward. Just over 7 minutes into the half, Missy took the ball from midfield and blew by the Bergen defense and buried it into the back of the net to tie the game at one. Alexander continued their strong play, but couldn't get the ball into the net. Despite the fact that Alexander didn't pick up a win in the tournament their play was strong enough not to lose a game. Livonia lost to Greece in the final 1-0, and I feel that if we had been able to put something together in the round robin portion of the tournament we could have challenged for the title. Nice job ladies, way to bounce back from a disappointing second game. |
