Alexander came back less than 12 hours after their
Fillmore tournament win and entered two teams into their own
tournament. As the day wore on Alexander looked tired but refused
to quit and would come away with their 2nd tournament title in a row.
Alexander 1 started off the day facing off against Oakfield. Alesha would score the lone goal of the game as Alexander picked up a 1-0 win. Leslie made 6 saves in net. Alexander didn't have as much movement off the ball as they did Saturday, but that was expected as 4 of the players had logged a good deal of minutes on Saturday. Alexander 2 started their day off against the Lancers next and despite playing a good game fell by a 1-0 score. Alexander took a bit to get going with their passing but they played strong on defense and got some fantastic goalie work from Chelsey as she made 18 saves in the net. Alexander 2 faced off against Kendall in their 2nd game of the day and jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the game off a goal from Missy. However the lead wouldn't hold up as Kendall got a nice goal to tie the game at 1. As the game wore on Alexander wore down and gave up 2 goals in the final minutes of the game to fall by a 3-1 count. Alexander 1 came back in their 2nd game of the day and squared off against Wheatland. Alexander would fall behind early but would get 2 goals from Rachel to go up 2-1. Wheatland would tie it up late with a dropped mark in the middle of the floor and was unable to get back ahead. Leslie made 7 saves in net. Alexander moved the ball relatively well and battled throughout the game. The game would finish in a 2-2 tie thanks to Leslie robbing Varin with seconds left on a breakaway. Alexander 2 and Newark played in what would prove to be the final game of the day for the Alexander 2 squad. Courtney would put Alexander up 1-0 off an assist from Missy just a short time into the game. However Alexander would wear down again and fall 3-1 in the end. Alexander had a lot of shots with Courtney and Missy each having 4 shots. Chelsey picked up 11 saves in net and played a strong game. It was a disappointing day with no wins, but Alexander played some solid soccer and just had trouble scoring. Alexander 1 faced off against the Lancers 17 squad in their final game of the day. They needed a win to move up in the standings and possibly win their division. Alexander would jump out early off a goal from Alesha (assisted by Stacey and Maranda). The Lancers would tie the game up moments later to make it 1-1. However Alexander would bounce right back with Rachel picking up a goal from Stacey and Alyssa finishing off the scoring from Sidney to make the final 3-1. Leslie had 11 saves in net to pick up the win and move Alexander into the playoffs as a #4 seed. Alexander entered into the playoffs against the #5 Genesee Valley team. Alexander looked tired and slow in the opening minutes and didn't look like they had a chance in the game. Genesee Valley scored on their first shot of the game to make it 1-0 under 1 minute into the game. This seemed to fire Alexander up and they found a bit of energy. Stacey scored 4 minutes into the game off an assist from Julia to tie the game at 1. Stacey would score again 6 minutes later to make it 2-1. Julia would score a minute after that off an assist from Leslie to make it 3-1. Stacey would pick up her 3rd goal of the game (for the hat trick) with a few minutes left in the game off an assist from Julia to make the final score 4-1. Leslie made 5 saves in net to pick up the win. Alexander moved into the semi-finals for a rematch with Wheatland (who upset the top seeded Lancers in the 1st round). Alexander came out a bit slow but fired themselves up and started putting balls into the net. Julia and Stacey both put a goal in to make it 2-0. Rachel scored next off an assist from Alesha, then Julia scored from Maranda to make it 4-0. Julia then made it 5-0 off an assist from Stacey. The Alexander defense was dominant allowing only 3 shots, all of which were stopped by Leslie. Alexander moved into the finals to face Livonia, who had knocked off Albion. Alexander was looking to do something they hadn't been able to do in the previous 2 years, win in the finals of their own tournament. Standing in their way was Livonia. Alexander came out slow once again looking sluggish and allowing and early goal thanks to poor marking 3 minutes into the game. Julia tied the game a minute later off an assist from Stacey to tie the game at one. Alexander was starting to build up some momentum thanks to some great passing and it would pay off as Stacey ripped a shot into the net to make it 2-1. Leslie was great in net stopping shot after shot and picking up 14 saves in all to preserve the 2-1 win. As the clock ticked down Alexander go closer to the title. Leslie made the final saves and sent Alexander to their 2nd title of the weekend (and an 11-0-2 record in both title runs). It was a great weekend of soccer. Many congratulations to all Alexander players who participated in Fillmore and the Alexander tournament. Great job, finally showing what you are truly capable of. |
