Alexander had 2 teams enter into their 10th grade and
under JV tournament Sunday. One team was made up of 10 sophomores
playing in their final JV level indoor tournament, while the other team
was made up of 13 7th graders and one 6th grader. Both teams came
away with impressive performances throughout the day as the 10th grade
team took home the title, while the 7th grade team earned quite a bit of
respect by playing 3 tough games and only giving up 5 total goals.
The 10th grade team had an impressive day going 5-0-1 overall on the day and only giving up 2 goals. Alexander started the day off with a 0-0 tie against Kendall despite outshooting Kendall by a large margin. Alexander was starting out slowly with their passing and wasn't finding their goal with their shots (although they were finding the posts quite often. Alexander's 2nd game looked to be a big problem as they went down 1-0 to Bergen early in the game. Alexander continued to have trouble passing and struggled to get the ball into the net. Julia would tie the game up just over 3 minutes into the game, and Alesha would give Alexander a much needed win with under 2 minutes to go in the game. Alexander came into their last game needing some points to assure themselves of a playoff spot and they got just that. Julia picked up a goal in the 1st minute off an assist from Alesha to make it 1-0. Julia would score 6 minutes later off an assist from Kristi to make it 2-0. Julia then scored her 3rd of the game just over a minute later to make it 3-0. Alehsa would score 2 minutes left and Lin would score the final goal off an assist from Julia with just 15 seconds left. Leslie picked up her 2nd shutout in the game making 3 saves. Into the playoffs Alexander went as the #3 seed and hoping to get a shot to take the title. Alexander started off against Nazareth and dominated the game winning 5-0. Kristi picked up the 1st goal of the game just over a minute and a half into the game. Laura would then score off an assist from Tara with 8 minutes left to make it 2-0. 90 seconds later Julia made it 3-0. Alesha would score 2 goals in the final 2 minutes (with Tara getting an assist) to make the final 5-0. Leslie had 8 saves for her 2nd straight shutout. Alexander next faced off against Kendall in the semi-finals in what was a great game. Alexander took the opening kickoff quickly with a give and go down the field and Lin ripped in a shot 5 seconds into the game (assist to Julia) to make it 1-0. From there it was all Alexander defense and Leslie making 9 huge saves to have the final score stay at 1-0. 2 times in the final 2 minutes Leslie punched away a dangerous shot in front of the net preserving the berth into the finals. Alexander faced off against Pal-Mac in the finals (the 4th meeting between an Alexander and a Pal-Mac team on the day). Alexander came out strong scoring just under 2 minutes into the game as Julia fired a shot home to make it 1-0. Just over 2 minutes later Alesha hit a rocket shot off an assist from Laura to make it 2-0. Alexander got a bit lazy with their marking and gave up a goal to Pal-Mac to make it 2-1. Julia would hit Kristi with a nice pass and Kristi took it in and drilled it home to make it 3-1. Leslie made 9 saves to preserve the lead and pick up the win in the finals. The 7th grade team played strong in all 3 of its games and was not blown out of any of the 3 contests. In their 1st game Alexander faced off against Pal-Mac (the team that finished in 2nd place) and had the game tied with less than a minute left at 0-0. Pal-Mac got a nice cross and finish with 4 seconds left in the game to win 1-0, but it was a very impressive performance throughout the game (especially considering that Pal-Mac ended up in 2nd place). Hannah had 11 saves in the game in her 1st of 3 great performances in the JV tournament. The 2nd game had Alexander facing the Lancers (the same Lancers team that has a win over the varsity team earlier this year). Alexander got off to a very slow start and fell behind 1-0 in the first minute. From there the game was pretty even and the only other goal that was scored was a rocket from out far by the Lancers that Hannah had no chance on. Hannah made 12 saves in the game. The defense and offense all had some great passing and movement of the ball and the marking was excellent throughout the game. In their last game Alexander faced off against Nazareth. Alexander came out in the 1st 5 minutes and took the play right into the Nazareth end. Alexander nearly converted 3 goals in the 1st 5 minutes and easily could have jumped out to a lead. But as the game wore on and Alexander tired a bit Nazareth picked up 2 very nice goals to win the game 2-0. Alexander had a lot of great passing sequences and dominated that portion of the game. Hannah had 9 saves in net for Alexander. It was a great day of soccer for both teams. In their final tournament as 10th graders Alexander's team picked up a big time tournament win and looked dominant throughout the day. The 7th graders showed that they are ready to step into the JV level sooner rather than later, and will look to pick up a few more titles of their own next year. Great job to everyone who played, and thanks to everyone who helped run the tournament. |
